Man United the only option for Cristiano Ronaldo, claims ex-defender
Craig Burley believes Manchester United is the only realistic destination for Cristiano Ronaldo if he leaves Real Madrid
Craig Burley believes Manchester United is the only option for Cristiano Ronaldo if the forward leaves Real Madrid.
The 32-year-old is facing an uncertain future at the La Liga champions after a slow start to the 2017-18 season for the Portugal international.
Ronaldo has only managed to score one goal and made a disappointing two assists in eight appearances in the Spanish top flight so far.
The Euro 2016 winner and Real Madrid are already well off the pace in the La Liga title race amid talk of Ronaldo’s time at The Bernabeu coming to an end.
Ronaldo has regularly been linked with a potential return to Manchester United over past three or four seasons.
Jose Mourinho’s appointment in May 2016 has further strengthened the link between Ronaldo and Manchester United given the pair’s previous working relationship.
While Burley isn’t sure whether Mourinho and Ronaldo have a close relationship, the ex-Chelsea star explained why Manchester United is the only realistic destination for the Ballon d’Or winner.
“His relationship with Mourinho, I don’t know how it is,” Burley told ESPN FC.
“But if that is good, then his relationship with (Sir Alex) Ferguson, who’s still at the club, he was a father figure to him.
“I’m not putting two and two together and getting five but if there is one club he is going to leave for, and they’ve got the ability to make the money work in both senses by paying him and getting it back, is Man United.”
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge of the Red Devils.
The 20-time English champions haven’t come close to winning the top-flight crown under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.
