Man United want to sign 23-year-old Barcelona star in January – report
Manchester United are considering a January transfer move to sign Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti, say reports
Manchester United are weighing up a January transfer move to sign Samuel Umtiti from Barcelona, according to reports in the British media.
The Daily Mirror is reporting that the Red Devils are pondering a move to bring the 23-year-old defender to Old Trafford as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his rearguard options at the club.
The same report claims that Mourinho is still keen to add another central defender to his squad to partner Eric Bailly in the long term.
It is also claimed that Mourinho has never been particularly impressed by Chris Smalling, and Victor Lindelof has failed to hold down a regular spot in the first team.
The story also suggests that Real Madrid and France defender Rafael Varane is Mourinho’s top target for defensive reinforcements, but that there is “no chance” of a reunion at Old Trafford.
Umtiti joined Barcelona from French side Lyon back in 2016 and he currently has a £53m release clause in his contract, which Mourinho reportedly believes is below his true value.
The defender is currently under contract at Camp Nou until 2021 but it remains to be seen whether the player himself would be keen on a move to Old Trafford or not.
