Thompson reacts to Moreno’s display in Liverpool FC’s 3-3 draw at Sevilla
Former Liverpool FC defender David Thompson raises questions about Alberto Moreno's performance at Sevilla
David Thompson criticised Alberto Moreno for a poor performance after Liverpool FC squandered a commanding lead to draw 3-3 at Sevilla in the Champions League.
The Spain international was out-of-favour at Anfield last season and Jurgen Klopp opted to use midfielder James Milner at left-back for most of the 2016-17 campaign.
Moreno spent most of the season on the sidelines before Liverpool FC signing Scotland left-back Andy Robertson in an £8m deal from Hull City in the summer transfer window.
Robertson’s arrival appeared to signal the end of Moreno’s Anfield career but the much-maligned Spanish defender defied his critics by becoming Liverpool’s first-choice left-back.
Moreno has been praised for his improvement defensively, while the former Sevilla defender has become an attacking force burst forward from full-back.
However, the 25-year-old struggled on his return to former club Sevilla and the left-back was at fault for the home side’s first goal before he conceded a penalty.
Moreno was hauled off with 25 minutes to go as Klopp returned to Milner at left-back to provide some stability with the scoreline at 3-2.
In what felt like an inevitable end to the Champions League clash, Sevilla’s Guido Pizarro levelled deep in added time to rescue a point for the hosts.
And former Liverpool FC midfielder Thompson raised some concerns about Moreno following his horror show in Spain.
Thompson wrote on Twitter:
“This the first test Moreno has had defensively this season so this is when you can judge him. He’s not been up against a team that’s attacked and now he has its forced him to defend which is where he fails.”
