Arsene Wenger described David De Gea as Manchester United’s man of the match “by a mile” in Saturday evening’s 3-1 win at Arsenal.

The Gunners were looking to secure a 14th successive win at the Emirates Stadium and deliver a blow to Manchester United’s title ambitions.

The Red Devils made the breakthrough in the fourth minute thanks to Antonio Valencia’s finish to put the Gunners on the back foot.

France international Anthony Martial capitalised on a rare Premier League start with an assist for Jesse Lingard to make it 2-0 in the 11th minute.

Spain international David De Gea came into his own in the final 34 minutes in the first half to keep Arsenal’s array attacking talent at bay.

The Red Devils shot stopper made 14 saves during the Premier League clash to protect Manchester United’s fragile advantage.

Alexandre Lacazette did halve the deficit early in the second half to offer Arsenal some hope before Paul Pogba’s brilliant run led to Lingard’s second goal of the night.

De Gea’s 14 saves equalled a Premier League record to bring to an end Arsenal’s winning streak at The Emirates.

Speaking to BBC Sport following a disappointing evening for Arsenal in the Premier League, Wenger said:

“It was a mystery yes (to not score more), but David de Gea was man of the match by a clear mile.”
