The pair were both heavily linked with moves away from The Emirates in the summer months after they entered into the final year of their contracts at the north London club.
However, Arsenal held firm and opted to keep hold of both players, despite neither of the pair being close to signing new contracts with the Gunners.
The speculation about both players’ futures is likely to continue as the January transfer window draws ever nearer.
And former Manchester United striker Rooney believes that both players are likely to leave Arsenal, either next summer or in January.
Speaking in an interview with talkSPORT, Rooney said: “With the two of them not signing contracts in the summer, I think that told you everything
“The way it is, I don’t think they will be at Arsenal [next season].
“I feel they should have taken the money and looked elsewhere because, although they are top players and it is difficult to let those players leave the football club, when the going gets tough – as it is at the minute for Arsenal – you want players who want to be there and you can put your trust in.
“If they are not going to be there at the end of the season, maybe there are a few question marks.”
Ozil was the star of the show as he scored Arsenal’s winner in their 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at The Emirates in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Gunners will return to Premier League action on Friday night with a crunch clash against top-four rivals Liverpool FC, as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain prepares to return to his former club for the first time since his summer move to Anfield.
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season.
