Wilkins blasts Wenger’s ’embarrassing’ Arsenal transfer blunder
Ray Wilkins questions why Arsene Wenger didn't sell Arsenal contract rebels Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez in the summer
Ray Wilkins has slammed Arsene Wenger’s decision not to sell Arsenal duo Mesut Ozil or Alexis Sanchez in the summer.
Both Ozil and Sanchez have little over six months remaining on their current Arsenal deals to create uncertainty about their long-term prospects at The Emirates.
Arsenal could risk losing their two big-money signings for nothing next summer unless the Gunners decide to cash in next month.
Of course, the Gunners could still manage to agree contract extensions with Ozil and Sanchez to defy talk of the duo both moving to Manchester.
The Premier League leaders have been linked with a move to sign Sanchez throughout the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materiaise.
The Citizens are still being touted as a potential destination for Sanchez, despite the impressive form of England international Raheem Sterling.
Ozil, on the other hand, has been linked with a potential reunion with former Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
Former Chelsea assistant manager Wilkins believes Wenger made a big mistake not selling Ozil and Sanchez in the summer.
“I would have sold Ozil in the summer, the same with Sanchez – it’s embarrassing,” Wilkins told sportingbet.
“I find it quite sad that the club have allowed Wenger to take the stance of not selling them, potentially costing the club £120m in fees that they’re now not getting.”
Arsenal lost 3-1 to Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium last weekend to drop out of the top four, before a 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday.
