Michael Owen: Man United shouldn’t drop 24-year-old for Arsenal clash
The Liverpool legend tells Jose Mourinho to stick with Romelu Lukaku for Man United's trip to Arsenal on Saturday evening
Michael Owen has urged Jose Mourinho to stick with Manchester United summer signing Romelu Lukaku for Saturday evening’s trip to Arsenal.
The Red Devils have won their last three Premier League games since a 1-0 loss to defending Premier League champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge back in October.
Manchester United have eased to comfortable victories over promoted sides Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion before a 4-2 win at Watford mid-week.
Lukaku ended a six-game goal drought with Manchester United’s fourth goal in a 4-1 win over the Magpies at Old Trafford in the same game where Zlatan Ibrahimovic made a return from a serious knee problem.
However, the Belgium international failed to find the net against Basel, Brighton and Watford to raise concerns about his confidence ahead of Saturday evening’s trip to Arsenal.
Lukaku has scored eight times in 14 games in the Premier League following his £75m move from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window.
Former Liverpool striker Owen doesn’t believe Mourinho should drop Lukaku in favour of starting Ibrahimovic at the Emirates Stadium this weekend.
“United need a big performance from Romelu Lukaku with many United fans suggesting this is a game Jose Mourinho should rest his expensive summer signing and include Zlatan Ibrahimovic,” Owen told BetVictor.
“I don’t think the striker should be dropped and am convinced it wouldn’t do Lukaku’s confidence any good if he was left out in such a big game.”
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but eight points adrift of current leaders Manchester City.
