Cesc Fabregas sends message to Chelsea’s title rivals after 3-1 win over Newcastle
The Chelsea midfielder has a message for their title rivals after Saturday's 3-1 win over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge
Cesc Fabregas backed Chelsea to extend their winning run as the defending champions look to overhaul leaders Manchester City and Manchester United in the title race.
The west London side kicked off the Premier League action this weekend with a home clash against former manager Rafael Benitez and his Newcastle side at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea fell behind in the 12th minute when Dwight Gayle broke the deadlock in west London having scored the opening goal in a 4-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford last month.
Like the Red Devils, the Premier League title holders came roaring back thanks to Eden Hazard’s fourth Premier League goal of the season in the 18th minute.
Summer signing Alvaro Morata out powered the Newcastle defence to take his tally to 10 goals before half-time to put the home side in charge of the Premier League fixture.
Hazard polished off what turned out to be a comfortable win with a deft chip from the penalty spot in the 77th minute after Victor Moses was brought down in the Newcastle area.
Chelsea moved to within eight points of Premier League leaders Manchester City thanks to their 3-1 victory over Newcastle with 23 games remaining in the current campaign.
Speaking to BBC Sport following Chelsea’s comfortable victory, experienced Spanish midfielder Fabregas said:
“The gap is eight points now, and there’s still a long way to go so that’s why we have to keep getting closer and closer and hope they slip up.
“They are there because they deserve it. Our job is to keep winning.”
