Frank Lampard reacts to Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid
Frank Lampard delivers his verdict on Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night
Frank Lampard warned that Chelsea could be made to rue their missed opportunities after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The result means that Antonio Conte’s men progress through to the knockout phase of Europe’s elite club competition as runners-up behind Roma on goal difference.
Chelsea fell behind in the 56th minute when Saul Niguez scored for the visitor.
But Eden Hazard inspired an equaliser in the 75th minute when his shot was deflected in by Stefan Savic.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Chelsea legend Lampard said: “The story of the night is the chances that Chelsea squandered in the second half.
“It was a competent display. In the first half they were OK, in the second half they were OK again and responded well to going one down.
“But when you create four or five guilt-edged chances, that’s what you’re going to rely on.
“When that draw comes out, if they get one of the bigger teams, they could look back and regret tonight.”
Chelsea will now face the winner of another group when the last 16 draw is made in Nyon on Monday 11 December.
The Blues will now switch their attentions back towards Premier League affairs and their trip to West Ham United on Saturday afternoon.
Chelsea are currently in third place in the Premier League table as they look to try and catch Manchester City and defend their title.
The west London side, who won the Premier League title last season, have only won the Champions League once in their history, back in 2012 under Roberto Di Matteo.
