Frank Lampard believes Chelsea have the chance to close ground on Premier League leaders Manchester City after securing their spot in the Champions League knockout stage.

The defending champions drew 1-1 with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night to secure a place in the Champions League last-16 draw.

The Blues finished behind Serie A club AS Roma to throw up the possibility of Chelsea facing La Liga leaders Barcelona or Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain in the next round.

Antonio Conte’s side are in third place in the Premier League table but are 11 points behind current leaders Manchester City as the west London side look to defend their top-flight crown.

Chelsea have won six of their last seven Premier League games to hoist themselves up to third place after losing to Burnley, Crystal Palace and Manchester City in their opening seven fixtures.

Former Blues midfielder Lampard believes Chelsea have the chance to build some momentum in the title race with their last-16 spot in the Champions League secured.

“They have a very good run of games [coming up in the Premier League] on paper,” Lampard told BT Sport.

“It doesn’t always mean that [it’s easy] in the Premier League as we all know.

“But having got through to the last 16, Chelsea can concentrate on their Premier League form now.”

Chelsea have won the Premier League title in two of the past three seasons to dominate the English top flight.

The Blues signed six players in the summer transfer window last term.
