Stan Collymore explains why Chelsea won’t challenge for title
The former Liverpool striker believes Chelsea will be distracted by the Champions League
Chelsea won’t challenge for the Premier League title this season given the distraction of the Champions League, Stan Collymore has claimed.
The title holders are in third place in the Premier League table and nine points behind current leaders Manchester City heading into the current round of fixtures.
Only Manchester City have been in better form than Chelsea since the start of October after the Blues collected 16 points from their last six Premier League games.
The defending champions were brilliant 1-0 winners against second-placed Manchester United at Stamford Bridge thanks to Alvaro Morata’s 55th-minute winner.
The west London side came from behind to rescue a 1-1 draw with top-six rivals Liverpool FC at Anfield last weekend after Willian cancelled out Mohamed Salah’s opener.
Chelsea battled to a 1-0 win over Swansea City mid-week to keep their unbeaten run going and strengthen their place in the Premier League’s top four.
The Blues have already secured their place in the Champions League last 16 thanks to a 4-0 win over Qarabag in Azerbaijan last time out.
Ex-Liverpool striker Collymore has ruled out Chelsea challenging Manchester City and Manchester United for the Premier League title.
“Chelsea should compete for longer than Liverpool and Arsenal but they too are having their struggles now they are back in the Champions League,” Collymore told Daily Mirror.
Chelsea have won the Premier League title in two of the past three seasons under Jose Mourinho and then Antonio Conte.
The Blues signed six players in the summer transfer window to improve their squad ahead of a potential title defence.
