Paul Merson states his prediction for Chelsea v Newcastle
The Arsenal legend is backing Chelsea to ease to a comfortable win over Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon
Paul Merson is backing Chelsea to beat Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
The defending champions have been on an excellent run of form over the past couple of months after bouncing back from successive losses to Manchester City and Crystal Palace in impressive style.
Indeed, title holders Chelsea have won five of their last six Premier League outings thanks to victories over Watford, Bournemouth, West Brom and Swansea City.
Antonio Conte’s side were also 1-0 winners against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge thanks to Alvaro Morata’s 55th-minute winner at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw with top-six rivals Liverpool FC at Anfield last weekend before Antonio Rudiger netted a second-half winner in a 1-0 victory over Swansea mid-week.
Newcastle are winless in their last five Premier League games following a run of four draws and one loss.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is backing Chelsea to beat Newcastle in Saturday’s early kick-off at Stamford Bridge.
“I can only see this going one way. Newcastle did great to come back against West Brom – but Chelsea aren’t West Brom,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Chelsea did OK against Swansea, who stayed in the game, but you need to finish games off – if Wayne Routledge had passed to Wilfried Bony at the back post late on, it’s a different game.”
Chelsea won the Premier League title with two games to spare after finishing seven points clear of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the title race last term.
The Blues signed six players in the summer transfer window to improve their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.
