N’Golo Kante insists that Chelsea are still confident that they can catch Manchester City in the race to defend their Premier League title this season.

The French midfielder was a key part of the Chelsea team who won the title under Antonio Conte in the Italian manager’s first campaign in charge last term.

Chelsea were by far and away the Premier League’s top performing team last season, but Conte’s men were helped by the fact that they did not have the distraction of European football at all.

This term, the Blues are having to contend with trying to fight for silverware on four fronts, as well as the fact that Manchester City are clearly establishing themselves as the favourites to win the title.

However, PFA player of the year Kante is confident that the Blues still have what it takes to defend their Premier League title this term.

Speaking in an interview with Chelsea’s website, Kante said of the title race: “The big teams are up there.

“Manchester City are well ahead, but the other teams are battling.

“The league is long and a lot can happen. We have to take it match by match, and we have to be ready to win because it’s not finished.”

Kante will be hoping to feature for Chelsea when the Blues return to Premier League action on Saturday with a home clash against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.

The west Londoners booked their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League last week with victory over Qarabag.
