Phil Thompson is backing Chelsea to finish in the Premier League top four but miss out on back-to-back titles.

The defending champions are in third place in the top flight table following their recent resurgence following a surprise 2-1 loss to relegation candidates Crystal Palace.

Chelsea won four successive Premier League games thanks to victories over Watford, Bournemouth, Manchester United and West Brom before last weekend’s trip to top-six rivals Liverpool FC.

Substitute Willian managed to cancel out Mohamed Salah’s 11th Premier League goal to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw for the reigning Premier League champions.

Antonio Conte’s men made a return to winning ways mid-week thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over Swansea City at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Chelsea are nine points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City after 14 games in the 2017-18 season so far.

The title holders are in third spot and are three points ahead of Liverpool FC in fifth place.

Former Liverpool FC defender Thompson believes Chelsea will secure a place in the top four in the Premier League table.

“I don’t think Chelsea have enough to defend their title but do think they will be in the top four and it will be tight between them and Spurs for third and fourth,” Thompson told Sky Sports.

Chelsea are looking to win their third Premier League title in four seasons but face a tough ask catching Manchester City.
