Ray Wilkins sends warning to Antonio Conte about Chelsea signings in January
The Chelsea legend believes Antonio Conte will find it difficult to land good signings in January
Ray Wilkins has questioned whether Antonio Conte will be able to find any quality signings for Chelsea in January.
The Blues have made a mixed start to the defence of their Premier League crown despite adding six new players to the squad in the summer transfer window.
Chelsea lost 3-2 to Burnley in their season opener at Stamford Bridge before losing to Manchester City and Crystal Palace either side of October’s international break.
The west London side produced an impressive performance in a 1-0 win over title rivals Manchester United at Stamford Bridge at the end of October.
Chelsea had won six of their last seven Premier League games to help the defending champions climb up the table into third place but they lost 1-0 to West Ham on Saturday.
The title holders have been short in midfield with Tiemoue Bakayoko and N’Golo Kante struggling with fitness problems.
Conte could be tempted to splurge some more transfer funds in January having already qualified for the Champions League knockout phase.
However, former Blues assistant manager Wilkins warned Conte about the quality of players that he could potentially signing next month.
“When you’re Chelsea, or any top club for that matter, you’re always looking for Champions League calibre players, most of which are already playing for teams in the competition and therefore are registered and won’t be able to play in European competitions for you,” Wilkins told Sky Sports.
“You have to look at teams who have had the unfortunate situation of dropping out of Europe.”
Chelsea have won the Premier League title in two of the past three seasons.
