Gary Lineker: Liverpool FC must make this signing in January
Gary Lineker calls on Jurgen Klopp to sign a new defender for Liverpool FC in January
Gary Lineker believes that it is crucial for Liverpool FC to sign a new defender in the January transfer window.
The Merseyside outfit were heavily linked with a move to land Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the summer months but a switch for the Netherlands defender failed to materialise.
Jurgen Klopp then opted not to bring in a central defender in the summer as he opted to stick with his current options at Anfield.
However, Liverpool’s defending has been called into question on a number of occasions this season and the Reds are bound to be linked with making defensive signings in January.
And former England striker Lineker reckons that Liverpool FC need to bring in defensive reinforcements in the new year if they are to challenge for trophies.
Speaking to BT Sport on Wednesday night, Lineker said: “They have a good squad. He’s got to go for [it in] January. That’s they key until the end of the season.
“They can’t afford to be weak back there when they’re playing lots of big teams in the competition [the Champions League].”
Liverpool FC booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League in style on Wednesday night with a 7-0 thrashing of Spartak Moscow at Anfield.
The Reds – who finished in fourth place in the table last season – now switch their attentions back towards Premier League affairs and their Merseyside derby showdown with Everton at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
