Michael Owen states his prediction for Liverpool FC v Spartak Moscow
Michael Owen looks ahead to Liverpool FC's Champions League clash with Spartak Moscow on Wednesday night
Michael Owen is backing Liverpool FC to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with victory over Spartak Moscow at Anfield on Wednesday night.
The Reds head into the game knowing that a victory over the Russian team would secure their place in the knockout phase of Europe’s elite club competition as group winners.
Liverpool FC have been in good form in recent weeks and they moved into the top four last weekend with a 5-1 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Merseyside outfit are currently playing in the Champions League for the first time under Jurgen Klopp and former Reds striker Owen is tipping them to secure their progress.
Writing in his column for BetVictor, ex-Manchester United and Liverpool star Owen said: “Liverpool will be guaranteed top spot in the group with a win at Anfield and only PSG have scored more goals in the group stages than the Reds.
“Spartak have lost 22 of their last 28 Champions League games on the road and it is hard to see them causing a shock against a Liverpool side who are in such good form of late.
“Liverpool haven’t reached the knock out stages of the competition since the 2008/9 season and it would be wonderful to have all five Premier League sides in the last 16 of the world’s premier club competition.”
The two teams played out a 1-1 draw when Liverpool FC travelled to Russia to take on Spartak on Matchday two.
Liverpool FC will then switch their attentions back to Premier League affairs and their crunch showdown with Everton at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds are aiming to at least better their fourth-placed finish in the Premier League from last season in their second full campaign under Klopp at Anfield.
