Michael Owen urges Liverpool FC to sign 26-year-old to complement Naby Keita
The Liverpool FC legend wants Jurgen Klopp to finally complete a deal to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk
Michael Owen has urged Liverpool FC to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in January.
The Reds were linked with a move to sign the Netherlands international in the summer transfer window.
However, Liverpool FC were unable to get a deal over the line and were forced to issue a statement apologising to the Saints over their pursuit of Van Dijk.
The 26-year-old even handed in a transfer request in August but Liverpool FC were forced to persist with Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip at the back.
Jurgen Klopp’s defence has been regularly criticised this term after conceding 19 times in their opening 15 games in the Premier League to undermine a potential title bid ahead of Sunday’s Merseyside derby.
Van Dijk has returned to the Southampton set-up but the Dutch centre-half hasn’t managed to recapture his best form at St Mary’s.
Former Liverpool FC striker Owen believes Klopp would have a formidable side with Van Dijk in the heart of his defence and Naby Keita in midfield.
“I agree [Liverpool FC should sign Van Dijk]. Van Dijk is a proper player. If they can get him and Keita in midfield, things are looking up,” Owen told BT Sport.
Liverpool FC add Keita to their squad next summer after the Reds agreed a £48m deal with Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig to sign the versatile midfielder at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.
