Jose Mourinbo believes Liverpool FC had no option but to spend over the odds to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds finally secured the signature of the Netherlands international on Wednesday evening after Liverpool FC reached a £75m agreement with Southampton for the centre-half’s sale.

Van Dijk was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool FC in the summer but a deal failed to materialise, and Chelsea and Manchester City were rumoured to have entered the race to sign the Dutch star ahead of the January transfer window.

Liverpool FC attracted some criticism after the Reds made the former Celtic star the most expensive defender in the world ahead of Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker and Chelsea centre-half David Luiz.

Mourinho spoke about his need for more transfer funds following Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Burnley at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

Speaking to the media ahead of Manchester United’s home clash against Southampton on Saturday afternoon, Mourinho appeared to defend Klopp over his decision to spend a club-record fee on the Southampton skipper.

“He trusted his work a lot, he told a few words and I think now he realises that it’s not enough to be champions, to win the Champions League, to win trophies,” Mourinho said.

“He needs more, so now you can see Liverpool with Naby Keita that they have already done for the next summer, with Virgil van Dijk now, a player who can also play in the Champions League, now they realise they have to go to the same levels of the crazy market because if they offer £40 million, Southampton won’t sell the player. It’s as simple as that, so that’s the reality.”

Manchester United have spent almost £300m on new players since Mourinho took over the reins at Old Trafford from Louis van Gaal in May 2016.
