Liverpool FC are unwilling to cough up Southampton’s £70m asking price to sign Virgil van Dijk in the January transfer window,

The Irish Independent is reporting that Liverpool FC’s aren’t willing to meet Southampton’s inflated transfer fee for the Netherlands international despite their long-term interest in the 26-year-old centre-half.

The same article states that the Reds acknowledge that they will find it difficult to compete with Chelsea and Manchester City for the signing of Van Dijk in the January transfer window.

According to the same story, the Premier League leaders and the defending champions are leading Liverpool FC in the race to sign Van Dijk as the Reds look to distance themselves from transfer speculation.

The Merseyside outfit were thought to be on the brink of signing Van Dijk in the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materialise.

However, Liverpool FC were forced to issue a statement apologising to Southampton after the Saints threatened to report the 18-time English champions for an alleged tapping up.

Van Dijk handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through a move but the former Celtic defender ended up remaining at the Saints beyond the summer transfer window.
