Joey Barton believes Manchester United really missed Anthony Martial following their 2-2 draw with Burnley at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

The France international was omitted from the Red Devils team due to a slight knee problem that the Manchester United forward suffered during a 2-2 draw with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium at the weekend.

Jose Mourinho opted to start with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the absence of Martial but the former Sweden international struggled to impress and was withdrawn at half-time with the Red Devils trailing 2-0.

His replacement Jesse Lingard scored twice in the second half to rescue a point in a 2-2 draw with Sean Dyche’s side at Old Trafford in a largely disappointing performance from Mourinho’s men.

Martial has scored six times and has made three assists in 18 appearances in the Premier League this season to start to turn a corner under the Portuguese coach following a tough 2017-18 campaign.

Former Manchester City midfielder Barton felt that Manchester United really missed Martial in their 2-2 stalemate with Burnley at Old Trafford.

Barton wrote on Twitter: “Unlucky there @BurnleyOfficial Would have taken a point at the start of the game. @ManUtd got out of jail. Thought they missed Martial today. Bad week for them.”

Martial moved to Manchester United in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in the 2015 summer transfer window.

He scored 18 times in 49 games in all competitions in his first season at Old Trafford.
