Neville: This Man United star will go down as one of Ferguson’s best signings
Phil Neville hails the impact of David De Gea at Manchester United over the past five seasons at Old Trafford
David De Gea will go down as one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s greatest-ever Manchester United signings, Phil Neville says.
The Red Devils goalkeeper has proven to be Manchester United’s match-winner on a regular basis under Louis van Gaal and his successor Jose Mourinho.
De Gea equalled a Premier League record with 14 saves in Manchester United’s 3-1 win against Arsenal in north London last weekend.
The 27-year-old has helped Manchester United secure the best defensive record in the Premier League thanks to his consistent performances in goal.
De Gea initially struggled at Old Trafford when Manchester United signed the shot stopper in an £18m deal from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid in the 2011 summer transfer window.
However, the Spanish starlet steadily improved and was part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s team that won the Premier League title in 2013.
Former Manchester United defender Neville claimed that De Gea is one of the best signings of Ferguson’s 25-year spell in charge.
“He was so skinny. He was so lost. He looked like a boy,” Neville told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“For Sir Alex to see the foresight of that ability. It has to be one of the best signings that Ferguson ever made. It was some signing he made.”
Manchester United have won the Europa League, the FA Cup and the League Cup in the past two seasons thanks in part to De Gea.
