Jamie Redknapp has admitted that he was wrong about Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea.

The 27-year-old equalled a Premier League record with a staggering 14 saves to help Manchester United secure a 3-1 win at bitter rivals Arsenal on Saturday evening.

The Spain international moved to the Red Devils in an £18m deal from La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid in the 2011 summer transfer window.

De Gea was signed as a long-term replacement for Edwin van der Sar but struggled with confidence and form in his initial spell under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Spanish shot stopper was part of the Manchester United team that won the Premier League title in 2012-13 to turn a corner at Old Trafford before Ferguson’s retirement.

De Gea was named Manchester United’s player of the year in 2014, 2015 and 2016 under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.

The Manchester United number one has won the Europa League, the FA Cup and the League Cup in recent seasons, while De Gea has helped the Red Devils to challenge Manchester City for the title this term.

Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Redknapp admits De Gea has proven him wrong over the past three or four seasons at Old Trafford ahead of next weekend’s derby at Old Trafford.

“I must admit I got it wrong about David de Gea when he arrived in the Premier League,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.

“Manchester United were at West Brom on the opening day of the 2011-12 season and I remember seeing this wiry 20-year-old in goal whose kit looked too big for him. I thought, ‘Surely he is not built for the physicality of the Premier League?’

“Since then, he has made all his critics eat their words. I do not think I have seen a better shot-stopper than De Gea. He is like a character in The Matrix the way he looks as if he is slowing the ball down before making a save!”
