The Red Devils currently find themselves in second place in the Premier League table and 11 points behind their bitter local rivals after the Citizens’ incredible start to the new campaign.
Manchester City have been in sensational form so far this season, with Pep Guardiola’s men currently top of the table after having only dropped two points in their first 18 games.
Manchester United are looking to enjoy some significant progress in the Premier League this season after the Red Devils finished in sixth place in the table last term.
And former Manchester United defender Neville feels that the Red Devils do have plenty to feel upbeat about, despite Manchester City’s incredible form.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Sunday, Neville said: “Every team in Premier League history would be chasing Manchester City considering what they’ve done this season. Sixteen wins and one draw is out of this world.
“United don’t need to be too hard on themselves. They are progressing, they are getting better, it is better than it has been for the last few years.
“But obviously people are just looking at what’s happening above and thinking United are way off.”
Manchester United will return to Premier League action on Saturday night when they travel to Leicester City in their final game before Christmas.
Before that, the Red Devils will take on Bristol City in the quarter-finals of the League Cup on Wednesday night.
Manchester United finished sixth but won both the League Cup and Europa League last season.
