Jamie Redknapp doesn’t believe Romelu Lukaku shouldn’t be permitted to use Manchester United’s lack of service as an excuse for the summer signing’s poor goal record against their title rivals this season.

The Red Devils signed the Belgium international in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window despite the prospect of a potential return to his former club Chelsea.

Lukaku scored 10 goals in his opening nine Premier League appearances but the big-money summer signing has only managed to score two times in their last 13 games in all competitions.

The 24-year-old has failed to find the net against Manchester United’s title rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool FC, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur this term.

Naturally, Lukaku’s big-game mentality has been questioned as a result of his poor goal return in Manchester United’s games against their title rivals this term.

Some have blamed Manchester United’s poor service for the summer signing’s disappointing record against their closest title challengers.

However, former Liverpool FC midfielder Redknapp believes Lukaku should be capable of creating goals out of nothing like Premier League greats such as Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer.

“Manchester United paid £75million for Romelu Lukaku to decide the big games. So far, he has come up short,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.

“He has now failed to score in all five games against United’s top six rivals, having only three shots on target. Seven of his eight league goals have been against sides in the bottom half with the other against 10th-placed Everton.

“It is not enough to say Lukaku is starved of service. The likes of Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer would conjure something from nothing.

“If Lukaku is going to emulate great forwards such as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford, he must become United’s game-changer.”

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term.
