The England defender has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford since Jose Mourinho’s appointment as manager in May 2016.
Shaw was signed in a £27m deal from Southampton in the 2014 summer transfer window but struggled to find his feet at Old Trafford in his first campaign as a Manchester United player.
However, the 22-year-old made an encouraging start to the 2015-16 season before the full-back suffered a double leg fracture in a 2-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
Mourinho had replaced Van Gaal as Red Devils boss when Shaw finally made his return from his horror injury but the England international failed to convince the Manchester United manager of his fitness and work ethic.
Shaw has been linked with a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur despite Manchester United’s lack of options at left-back with veteran midfielder Ashley Young being used in the unorthodox role.
The ex-Southampton defender was named man of the match following his standout performance in a 2-1 win against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Former Liverpool FC midfielder Gerrard explained why he wants to see Shaw do well at Manchester United.
“As an England fan I want to see him back playing on a regular basis because when he’s on top of his game he’s quality and probably one of the best left-backs in the country,” Gerrard told BT Sport.
