The 20-time English champions failed to seize the opportunity to reduce Manchester City’s lead to five points at Old Trafford last weekend despite having home advantage in the top of the table clash.
The Citizens made the breakthrough in the 42nd minute when David Silva steered a finish past David De Gea following some poor defending from Manchester United summer signing Romelu Lukaku.
England international Marcus Rashford levelled the Premier League clash in added time at the end of the first half to offer the Red Devils some hope of a comeback.
However, Lukaku’s poor clearance allowed Nicolas Otamendi to secure a 2-1 win at Old Trafford and leave Manchester City 11 points ahead of second-placed ahead of Manchester United.
The Red Devils topped their Champions League group last week thanks to a 2-1 victory over CSKA Moscow and were rewarded with a last-16 clash against La Liga outfit Sevilla.
Former Liverpool striker Owen believes Mourinho will prioritise Manchester United’s participation in the Champions League ahead of the Premier League title race.
“There’s a long time until the knockout stage,” Owen told BT Sport.
“February is a long time, so I’m sure Jose Mourinho will probably be prioritising the Champions League more so than the league now as well if the points gap doesn’t close between now and then.”
