Michael Owen admits his confidence in Manchester United has been shaken following Sunday’s 2-1 loss to title rivals Manchester City.

The Red Devils miss out on the chance to reduce the Premier League leaders’ advantage to five points with 22 games to play at Old Trafford.

Indeed, Manchester City broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute when Romelu Lukaku deflected the ball into David Silva’s pass under pressure from Nicolas Otamendi, before the Spanish midfielder steered a finish past David De Gea.

Jose Mourinho’s men were level at the half-time thanks to Marcus Rashford’s equaliser after the England international managed to finish past Ederson following poor defending from Fabian Delph and Otamendi.

However, Manchester City converted their dominance into three points when Lukaku’s rushed clearance hit his own team-mate and rebounded into Otamendi’s path before the South American centre-half made it 2-1.

Manchester United were pitted against La Liga giants Sevilla in the Champions League last-16 draw on Monday.

But Owen admitted that Manchester United’s performance in the derby has made him question Mourinho’s defence.

“It was plain sailing in the group stage,” Owen told BT Sport.

“I think until Sunday that Manchester United are the type of team who defend very well. They’ve got the best goalkeeper in the world.

“They don’t give many chances away. And they’ve got a few threats up front, so you’d think it’s quite a European style team. But yesterday has put me off just a little bit because they were well and truly out-played by Manchester City.”

Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but 11 points behind Manchester City in the title race.

The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the table but won the Europa League and the League Cup in Mourinho’s first season at Old Trafford.
