Paul Scholes has warned Jesse Lingard that it is now time for him to deliver on a consistent basis for Manchester United.

The England international earned plenty of praise for his performance in the 3-1 Premier League victory over Arsenal last weekend, when he scored once in either half to help his side claim a brilliant win.

Lingard, however, has found his first-team opportunities at Manchester United to be restricted this season, with the 24-year-old having only started three of the Red Devils’ 15 Premier League games.

The attacker was left on the bench for Manchester United as they secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday night with a 2-1 win over CSKA Moscow.

Scholes was delighted by what he saw from Lingard in the victory over Arsenal on Saturday night, but the Manchester United legend wants to now see him kick on and be more consistent.

Speaking to BT Sport on Tuesday night, Scholes said: “It was nice for Jesse [to play well against Arsenal].

“We saw him score a great goal against Watford and we just hoped he could go on from that in the big games.

“It was a big statement from him and it’s really time – at 24 years of age – for him to kick on now.”

Manchester United will return to Premier League action on Sunday when they host Manchester City in the crunch derby clash at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils head into the game knowing that a win would leave them eight points behind leaders Manchester City heading into the hectic festive period in the English top flight.
