Rio Ferdinand explains why he is such a keen admirer of Jesse Lingard at Manchester United
Rio Ferdinand has explained why he is such a big fan of Jesse Lingard at Manchester United.
The England international was in fine form on Saturday as he scored two goals for Jose Mourinho’s men to help Manchester United wrap up an impressive 3-1 victory over Arsenal.
Lingard has scored three goals and made three assists in 13 Premier League games for Manchester United to help them challenge Manchester City for the title.
However, he has found his first-team opportunities in the top flight to be somewhat limited this term, with Lingard having only started three games so far.
But former Manchester United defender Ferdinand is clearly a keen admirer of Lingard and he praised him for his hard-working display during the Red Devils’ win at Arsenal.
Speaking to BT Sport after Saturday’s game, Ferdinand said of Lingard: “People want to see step-overs and glitz and glamour. This kid ain’t about that.
“He is runner. He identifies where this space to hurt the opposition. He does it as good as anyone in the game. When he does get in there, he is a fantastic finisher.”
Manchester United are now preparing for their crunch Premier League showdown with Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Mourinho’s men are currently second in the table and eight points behind Pep Guardiola’s league leaders, who have only dropped two points so far this season.
Manchester United have not won the Premier League title since their famous final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
