The Spanish shot-stopper has been earning plenty of praise for his performances for the Red Devils this season.
De Gea was particularly impressive as he helped Manchester United beat Arsenal 3-1 at The Emirates at the start of the month.
He has played every single minute of Manchester United’s Premier League campaign so far this season and is widely regarded as one of the finest shot-stoppers in world football.
And former Liverpool FC star Souness has picked De Gea as his player of the year for 2017 in the Premier League following his brilliant performances for Manchester United.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Souness said: “Goalkeepers win you trophies every bit as much as someone who puts the ball in the back of the net and runs away holding his hand aloft towards their supporters.
“I’m going for De Gea [as player of the year] because he’s totally unassuming when he makes these great saves.
“I’ve been a manager, I’ve been part of a team that’s won trophies and I know how important it is to have a good goalkeeper behind you.
“You must have a top goalkeeper and United have arguably got the best one around right now.”
De Gea will be expecting to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils return to Premier League action on Boxing Day with a home clash against Swansea City.
The Red Devils are aiming to get back to winning ways in the top flight after the disappointment of their 2-2 draw with Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday night.
Manchester United have not won the Premier League since their final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
