Jose Mourinho has admitted that he was thrilled by Luke Shaw’s performance for Manchester United in the 2-1 win over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Shaw has been largely out of favour under Mourinho at Old Trafford this season, but the England international was handed his first start of the season against the Russian side.

The 22-year-old defender played the full 90 minutes against CSKA and impressed, particularly with his efforts going forwards.

Shaw will now be hoping to hold down a more regular place in the Manchester United team this season as he bids to work his way up to full fitness.

And Mourinho was very happy with the England international’s display at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, although he admitted that it will take some time for him to get back fully fit.

Mourinho told his post-match news conference on Tuesday night at Old Trafford: “A very positive performance, especially with the balls going forward.

“Creating a lot, great intensity in his game. It was no surprise that in 80 minutes he’s feeling the consequences of that intensity; it’s normal as it’s the first match of the season for him. But he’s going to get more.”

It remains to be seen whether Shaw has done enough to convince Mourinho that he may be ready to start for the Red Devils in their crunch derby clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

The Red Devils head into that game eight points behind Pep Guardiola’s Premier League leaders after 15 games of the new campaign.
