The 24-year-old drew another blank on Sunday as he couldn’t prevent the Red Devils from slipping to a disappointing 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the derby clash at Old Trafford.
Lukaku was at fault for Manchester City’s second goal, and the Belgian missed a clear-cut chance late on to net an equaliser for Jose Mourinho’s men.
The forward has been in stuttering form for Manchester United in recent weeks, and Lukaku has only netted twice in his last 10 Premier League games for the Red Devils.
However, former Liverpool FC star Souness believes that Lukaku’s struggles are mainly down to the lack of quality in the final third at Manchester United right now.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Sunday’s game, Souness said: When you come with a big price there’s always pressure but I wouldn’t be too critical of him.
“I think it’s the team he’s playing in. He’s not playing with a David Silva or Kevin De Bruyne – he’s feeding on poor passes.
“Sharing balls, balls that are hit at the wrong angle. I think the boy is running around but he’s getting no quality service.”
Lukaku will be hoping to help Manchester United return to winning ways on Wednesday night when the Red Devils host Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
Sunday’s loss left Mourinho’s men 11 points behind leaders Manchester City as they bid to try and claw their way back into the title race this season.
