The Red Devils are winless in their last three games in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup to heap pressure on manager Jose Mourinho.
Manchester United suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to Championship side Bristol City in the League Cup quarter-finals before the Red Devils played out successive 2-2 stalemates with Leicester City and Burnley.
The 20-time English champions are 15 points behind current Premier League leaders Manchester City following the Citizens’ hard-fought 1-0 win against Newcastle United on Tuesday night.
Fortunately for Mourinho and his Manchester United players, their next Premier League fixture is against a Southampton side that have drawn three times and lost three games in their last six outings.
The Saints suffered a further blow mid-week after club captain Virgil van Dijk agreed a £75m move to Liverpool FC with days until the January transfer window opens.
Former Manchester United striker Owen is confident the Red Devils will return to winning ways against Mauricio Pellegrino’s struggling Southampton side.
“Burnley nearly pulled off a shock on Boxing Day but the bottom line is neighbours City are the only opposition in the PL to have won at Old Trafford since Jose Mourinho took over,” Owen told BetVictor.
“I expect United to get back to winning ways when Southampton are the visitors this weekend.
“Southampton have won just one of their last 11 in the Premier League, conceded five at Wembley earlier in the week and it is hard to believe they can get something against a United side who are looking to do the double over the Saints following their 1-0 win at St Mary’s back in September.”
The Red Devils signed three players in the summer transfer window to improve their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.
