Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, as quoted by the Daily Mirror, is reporting that the Red Devils have identified Mario as a possible target for the mid-season transfer window as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his squad.
Mkhitaryan has struggled to produce consistent form for Manchester United this season and was once again left out of the squad altogether for the 1-0 win over Bournemouth at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
His lack of playing time this season has inevitably prompted suggestions that he could be on his way out of Old Trafford, and it is claimed that the 24-year-old Mario could be lined up as his replacement.
The same report says that Inter Milan would look to recoup the £40m paid to sign Mario from Sporting Lisbon in 2016.
Mario has made three assists in 11 Serie A appearances for Inter Milan so far this season.
Mkhitaryan, meanwhile, has made five assists and scored one goal in 12 Premier League games this term, but he has not featured since the 1-0 win over Brighton on 25 November.
