Michael Owen states ‘open’ prediction for Southampton v Arsenal
The Liverpool legend is tipping Arsenal to beat Southampton in the Premier League at St Mary's on Sunday afternoon
Michael Owen is backing Arsenal to come out on top in an “open” game at Southampton on Sunday.
The Gunners produced a brilliant performance in a disappointing 3-1 loss to title rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend.
David De Gea made a record equalling 14 saves to restrict Arsenal to one goal in a disappointing evening for the north London side.
Manchester United’s triumph ended Arsenal’s 12-game winning run at the Emirates Stadium and inflicted upon the Gunners a first defeat in four Premier League outings.
Arsene Wenger’s side slipped to fifth place in the Premier League table following their fourth top-flight defeat of the 2017-18 campaign.
Arsenal ended a poor run at St Mary’s with back-to-back wins against Southampton in the FA Cup and the Premier League last season.
Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Owen is backing Arsenal to continue their winning run against Southampton in an open fixture at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.
“Arsenal have had a modest record at St Mary’s in recent times but if they win at Southampton on Sunday it will be a third success for the Gunners on the south coast following their wins in the league and FA Cup earlier in the year,” Owen told BetVictor.
“The Gunners played some terrific football against Manchester United last week and they are unlikely to come up against a keeper as inspired as David De Gea was on Sunday.
“The Saints are in decent form themselves but I fancy Arsenal in what promises to be an open entertaining contest.”
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira inspired the Gunners to top-flight glory in a famous unbeaten campaign.
The Gunners have won the FA Cup crown in three of the past four seasons.
