Paul Merson states his prediction for Southampton v Arsenal
Paul Merson looks ahead to Arsenal's trip to Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday
Paul Merson is backing Arsenal to claim a 3-1 win over Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
The north London side head into the game fresh from having completed their Europa League group stage campaign in style with a 6-0 victory over BATE Borisov.
Arsenal have been in stuttering form in the Premier League this season and have already lost five games in the top flight as they look to try and at least get back into the top four.
They were beaten 3-1 by Manchester United at The Emirates last weekend to further damage their Premier League title hopes.
Arsene Wenger’s men ended up in fifth place in the top flight last term as they missed out on Champions League qualification and instead had to settle for a Europa League place.
However, Merson is fully expecting to see Arsenal claim all three points on the south coast this weekend.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “Before last week, I thought it was impossible to play that well and lose a game. Man United were second best at the Emirates and won 3-1.
“But this is a nice game for Arsenal. Southampton are a nice team.
“On a lovely pitch, Southampton aren’t going to really get at Arsenal, and these are the games that Arsenal like, and play their best football. If they play at the same level as last week, then Southampton won’t be able to handle them.”
Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
The north London side did, however, win the FA Cup for the third time in four years last term after beating Chelsea in the Wembley final.
