Paul Merson blames Mauricio Pochettino for Tottenham slump
The Arsenal legend blames Mauricio Pochettino for Tottenham's disappointing form in the Premier League
Paul Merson has blamed Mauricio Pochettino for Tottenham Hotspur’s alarming slump in form in the Premier League.
Spurs lost 1-0 to title rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford in October after Anthony Martial scored a late winner to deny Tottenham a well-earned point.
Tottenham returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over the Premier League’s basement club Crystal Palace before the most recent international break but Spurs have struggled since the return of top-flight football.
Arsenal produced a surprisingly commanding performance in a 2-0 win over Pochettino’s side in the north London derby at the start of November thanks to goals from Skodran Mustafi and Alexis Sanchez.
Spurs were unable to beat West Brom despite the Baggies’ documented struggles even though Harry Kane managed to rescue a point for the Lilywhites at Wembley.
The north London outfit lost 2-1 to 2015 Premier League champions Leicester City at the King Power Stadium mid-week as Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez beat Hugo Lloris.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson questioned some of Pochettino’s tactical decisions over the past month or so during Tottenham’s disappointing run of form.
“I don’t think Mauricio Pochettino has helped,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“In the north London derby, they were still in the game against Arsenal but he takes off Dele Alli and Harry Kane ahead of the Champions League match.
“That sends out a message that they can’t win the league…but they need to make top four. A bit of poor play has crept into Tottenham, especially defensively, which I haven’t seen before.
“They’re missing Toby Alderweireld, who is the best centre-back in the world.”
Tottenham finished in second place in the Premier League table last term to secure a Champions League spot.
