Ian Wright: What Arsenal need from Henrikh Mkhitaryan to finish in top four
The Arsenal legend is hoping new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan can produce his Borussia Dortmund form in a Gunners shirt
Ian Wright has challenged Henrikh Mkhitaryan to rediscover his Borussia Dortmund form to help Arsenal secure a top-four finish.
The Gunners signed the 29-year-old in a swap deal with Manchester United on Monday evening as Alexis Sanchez headed in the opposite direction.
The north London side will be hoping to tease some form out of the Armenia international following his underwhelming spell at Manchester United.
Mkhitaryan scored 11 times and made 15 assists in his final season in the Bundesliga before his £30m switch to Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils outfit in 2016.
Indeed, he was named the Bundesliga’s players’ player of the season thanks to his outstanding performances throughout the 2015-16 campaign for Dortmund.
Former Arsenal striker Wright is optimistic that Mkhitaryan can reproduce his best form at Arsenal and help Arsene Wenger’s men challenge for a top-four spot.
“I’ve seen enough of him when he has played, he definitely has quality,” Wright told The Debate on Sky Sports on Tuesday night.
“When he played in the Dortmund team. If he can recapture that form. That’s the big risk.
“Arsenal need that to get back in amongst the top four.”
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 and the Gunners appear to be regressing under Wenger following a fifth-placed finish last term.
The Gunners are in sixth spot in the current top-flight standings and five points adrift of Liverpool FC, who occupy the final Champions League spot.
Wenger’s men could qualify for Europe’s premier club competition if Arsenal win the Europa League.
