Ian Wright: Why I won’t be surprised if 29-year-old leaves Arsenal
The Arsenal legend can understand Alexis Sanchez's desire to leave the north London side and move to Manchester City
Ian Wright insists he can understand Alexis Sanchez’s desire to leave Arsenal and move to Manchester City.
The Gunners forward has been linked with a move to the Premier League leaders on a frequent basis over the past 12 months or so.
Arsenal have been unable to tie down the Chile international to a new long-term contract to raise questions about his future at the club.
The north London outfit could sell Sanchez in the January transfer window in a cut-price deal to ensure a return on the South American.
Sanchez could leave on a free transfer at the end of the season if a move doesn’t materialise this month.
The north London side have won the FA Cup in three of the past four seasons, but Arsenal haven’t been crowned Premier League champions since 2004.
Former Arsenal striker Wright isn’t surprised Sanchez wants to leave the Gunners considering their regression under Arsene Wenger.
“He is going to a place where he believes he has a great opportunity of winning things,” Wright told The Debate on Sky Sports on Wednesday night. “I have to agree with him.
“I am surprised he is still there. I will be very surprised if he is still there at the end of January.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League spot for the first time under Wenger.
The Gunners lost 4-2 to Championship side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup third round last weekend.
