Arsenal need to sign a “commanding” centre-half and midfielder in the January transfer window, according to Tony Gale.
The Gunners are in sixth place in the Premier League table and five points adrift of Liverpool FC, who occupy the final Champions League spot.
Arsenal appear to be regressing under Arsene Wenger despite the Frenchman spending £52m club-record fee on Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette in the summer.
While the France forward has complimented Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez up front, Arsenal continue to leak goals at an alarming rate.
Indeed, the Gunners suffered a shock 4-2 loss to Championship side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup third round last weekend to end their defence of their crown.
Calum Chambers and World Cup winner Per Mertesacker were particularly poor in the centre of Wenger’s defence at the City Ground.
Former West Ham striker Gale believes Wenger needs to address the defensive weaknesses in his Arsenal team.
“They need a centre-back, they need a commanding central midfield player who’s good and stable and is going to command that area so the other players are going to get on with it,” Gale told Sky Sports News on Wednesday morning.
“It seems the same in every transfer window about Arsenal. Same old, same old.”
Arsenal signed Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 in the summer transfer window.
The Gunners have conceded more goals than Liverpool FC this term despite criticism of Jurgen Klopp’s back four this term.
The north London side were 2-1 winners against Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley last term.
