Charlie Nicholas: I’ll be disappointed if Arsenal don’t make this January signing
The Arsenal legend wants to see Arsene Wenger make a defensive signing in January
Charlie Nicholas has admitted that he will be disappointed if Arsenal don’t sign a new defender in the January transfer window.
The Gunners signed Manchester United playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a swap deal last Monday as Alexis Sanchez moved to Old Trafford.
The north London side are also being linked with a move to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to help fill Sanchez’s void.
Arsenal signed promising 20-year-old Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos earlier in the January transfer window before sending the youngster on loan.
The Gunners have conceded 31 times in 24 games in the Premier League this season to raise questions about their back four.
Nacho Monreal has been the north London side’s most consistent defender this term, while Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi and Hector Bellerin all struggling with form.
Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas is desperate to see Wenger sign a new defender in the January transfer window to shore up his defensive options.
“I would be disappointed if Arsenal don’t get a defender, especially if they decide to loan out Konstantinos Mavropanos,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“Our scouts should be focusing improving the quality of the first team, somebody with pace, power and leadership, rather than stockpiling potential.”
Arsenal are in sixth place in the Premier League table and five points adrift of Liverpool FC, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.
The Gunners were 2-1 winners against defending Premier League champions Chelsea in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final last term.
