Arsene Wenger urged to make Arsenal signing to build ‘exciting’ partnership
Charlie Nicholas is hoping that Arsenal can conclude a deal to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could forge an exciting partnership with Henrikh Mkhitaryan if Arsenal complete a deal for the Dortmund striker, Charlie Nicholas has claimed.
The Gunners signed Mkhitaryan from Manchester United in a swap deal last week as Alexis Sanchez finally left the north London side to move to Manchester United.
The Armenia international will help to add even more creativity to Arsene Wenger’s midfield alongside World Cup winner Mesut Ozil and England international Jack Wilshere.
Mkhitaryan could link up with his former Dortmund team-mate Aubameyang at Arsenal as the Gunners pursue the Gabon international in the January transfer window.
The Gabon international has netted 141 times in 212 games in all competitions but Aubameyang has courted controversy at the Bundesliga outfit in recent seasons.
Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas is excited about the prospect of Aubameyang joining Mkhitaryan at the Emirates Stadium and teaming up with attackers Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette.
“I think it could be an exciting partnership to watch flourish, with Mkhitaryan on the right-hand side and Mesut Ozil operating in a freer role behind,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“What you’d get in Aubameyang is a player suited to Arsenal and in a similar role to the one Anthony Martial plays for Manchester United, as he doesn’t like being tightly marked.
“Lacazette is doing brilliant work linking up, to the deficit of his goal tally, so I think Aubameyang will open up additional space by getting in behind from wide areas with his pace.”
Arsenal are in sixth place in the Premier League table and five points adrift of Liverpool FC, who occupy the final Champions League spot.
The Gunners were 2-1 winners against defending English champions Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.
