Ian Wright replies to reports Arsenal want to sign 28-year-old
Ian Wright has accused Arsenal of "panicking" in the January transfer window
Ian Wright has accused Arsenal of panicking in the January transfer window.
The Gunners have been linked with a potential swap deal with Manchester United involving Alexis Sanchez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The Chile international is set to become a free agent in the summer and has shown no intention of extending his current Gunners deal.
Manchester United are thought to be prepared to offer Mkhitaryan as a makeweight in the deal for Sanchez.
Arsenal are also rumoured to be chasing 28-year-old Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has scored 141 goals in 212 games for BVB.
The Gabon international has been one of Europe’s most prolific strikers, although questions remain about his professionalism and temperament.
Former Arsenal striker Wright isn’t convinced that either Aubameyang or Mkhitaryan are the answer to the north London side’s woes.
“He [Aubameyang] is not a player Arsenal have been after. He is a player Arsenal are being handed,” Wright told The Debate on Sky Sports on Wednesday.
“It’s the same with Aubameyang. He was someone a few years ago that everyone wanted then it went cold. Now all of a sudden he is on Arsenal’s radar. It feels panicky.”
Arsenal have won the FA Cup crown in three of the past four seasons but Wenger can’t rely on the cup competition to provide the Gunners with some scant consolation this term after their third-round exit.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04.
