Jamie Redknapp: Arsenal need top-class defensive signing
Jamie Redknapp believes that Arsenal need to sign a top quality centre-half after their recent struggles
Jamie Redknapp has urged Arsene Wenger to sign a top-class centre-half to improver the Arsenal defence.
The Gunners lost 2-1 to Bournemouth on the south coast last weekend following a fifth defeat of the season on the road but returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace.
Arsenal have now conceded 30 times in 23 games in the Premier League this season after the disappointment at Bournemouth.
To put that defensive record in context, Arsenal have shipped more goals than Burnley, Brighton and West Brom.
The Gunners signed German star Shkodran Mustafi in a £35m deal from La Liga side Valencia in the 2016 summer transfer window.
However, the former Everton man has struggled to impress since his move to the north London side 18 months ago.
Former Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur captain Redknapp criticised the lack of leadership in the Arsenal team.
“There is no leadership in the back three of Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding and Calum Chambers. Laurent Koscielny aside, I cannot remember the last time Arsenal bought a top-class centre half,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a place in the Champions League.
The Gunners won their third FA Cup title in four seasons following a 2-1 win over defending champions Chelsea.
