Arsenal tipped to make proven 30-year-old their next signing
Shaka Hislop discusses the reports linking Arsenal with a move to sign Jonny Evans from West Bromwich Albion
Arsenal have been tipped to sign Jonny Evans from West Bromwich Albion in the January transfer window by Shaka Hislop.
The north London side have been heavily linked with a move to land the 30-year-old defender this months as Wenger looks to shore up his rearguard options in the mid-season transfer window.
Evans was in good form for West Brom as he helped his side to beat Liverpool FC 3-2 at Anfield in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday night.
The former Manchester United defender has also been touted as a possible target for Manchester City.
However, former goalkeeper Hislop admits that his proposed transfer to Arsenal this month does make sense.
Speaking to ESPN FC, Hislop said: “I thought he would have gone to Manchester City.
“They’ve set their sights elsewhere to Laporte.
“I think this makes a lot of sense. Right now you have (Laurent) Koscielny and (Nacho) Monreal playing as the two centre halves, you’ve got others who can come in.
“But I think Evans gives options, allows Monreal to drift out to the left.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal are currently preparing for their Premier League trip to Swansea City on Tuesday night.
The north London side are in sixth place in the Premier League table as they bid to secure Champions League qualification this season.
The Gunners missed out on a spot in Europe’s elite club competition last term after they ended up in fifth place in the Premier League table.
Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
