Insider confirms Arsenal have expressed interest in proven 30-year-old defender
Sky Sports News reporter Bryan Swanson confirms Arsenal are interested in Northern Irishman defender Jonny Evans
Arsenal have been in touch with West Brom to express an interest in former Manchester United defender Jonny Evans, according to reporter Bryan Swanson.
The Northern Ireland international was linked with a potential switch to the Gunners in the summer transfer window but a move failed to materialise.
Manchester City were thought to be interested in a move to sign Evans last summer, but the Citizens didn’t end up matching West Brom’s £25m asking price.
The 30-year-old defender has been a key member of the West Brom side after former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal sold Evans to the Baggies in the 2015 summer transfer window.
Arsenal have struggled defensively in the current campaign after conceding 28 times in 22 games in the Premier League this season, while the Gunners suffered a chastening 4-2 loss to Championship outfit Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup third round at the weekend.
Sky Sports News reporter Swanson confirmed Arsenal are interested in the experienced Northern Irish defender, but added that the Gunners are still in the early stages of a potential January deal.
“West Brom defender Jonny Evans remains one to watch in this transfer window,” Swanson told Sky Sports News on Monday.
“We know that Arsenal are looking to strengthen this month. We’re told they’ve enquired about Evans along with Manchester City. No formal bids have been made. Arsene Wenger hasn’t rushed to deny interest in Evans but says nothing is advanced at this stage.”
Arsenal signed Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos from PAS Giannina last week after the 20-year-old’s impressive performances in the Greek Super League.
