Arsenal Wenger told to sign proven 30-year-old for Arsenal this month
Paul Merson believes that Arsenal should try and make a move to sign Jonny Evans from West Brom
Paul Merson has urged Arsene Wenger to make a move to bring defender Jonny Evans to Arsenal from West Brom in the January transfer window.
The Gunners have been linked with a host of players in recent days as Wenger looks to bolster his squad in the mid-season window.
Evans has been touted as a possible target for Arsenal in the past, with the north London side’s defensive frailties regularly spoken about.
It remains to be seen whether or not Arsenal will indeed make a move to try and sign Evans this month, but Merson says he would love to see the Gunners bring the Northern Ireland defender to north London.
Speaking on The Debate on Sky Sports, Merson said: “They need someone at the back. If you keep on leaking goals and defending like they are then you are not going to get in the top four.
“I’m a big fan of Evans. People might say he’s at West Brom, but he’s one of the best centre-halves around in my opinion.
“He is very underrated, he would be up the top of my list. Get Sanchez done if you can get Mkhi in, and then I would go and get Evans.
“I still think they need a holding player and they are poor at the back. Until they sort that out you can have 10 forwards but it still won’t be good enough.”
Evans has scored two goals and made one assist in 20 Premier League games so far this season for the Baggies.
Arsenal are currently preparing for their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace at The Emirates on Saturday afternoon.
The Gunners head into the game looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League after the disappointment of their 2-1 loss at the hands of Bournemouth last week.
The north London side are currently in sixth place in the table and eight points adrift of the top four.
