Arsene Wenger is remaining tight-lipped about the prospect of Arsenal signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January transfer window.

The Gabon international has emerged as Arsenal’s top target to replace Alexis Sanchez at the north London club after the South American completed a move to Manchester United.

Aubameyang would be a striker with the pedigree to fill Sanchez’s void in Wenger’s team following a brilliant return of 141 goals in 212 games in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund.

The 28-year-old has proven a controversial figure at Dortmund over the past couple of seasons following a number of clashes with the hierarchy at Westfalenstadion.

Arsenal were rumoured to be willing to pay a club record fee for the African forward despite spending £52m on Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette back in the summer transfer window.

Wenger refused to shed any light on Arsenal’s pursuit of the Gabon forward in the January transfer window.

“I don’t give you any special name,” Wenger told his news conference on Friday when asked directly about Aubameyang.

“We may still recruit somebody, it’s possible. We try, but at the moment we are not close to signing anybody.”

Arsenal suffered a 4-2 loss to Championship side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup third round at the City Ground earlier this month.

The Gunners will take on 20th-placed Swansea City in their next Premier League game on Tuesday night.

The north London side are in sixth place in the Premier League table.
