Ex-Arsenal defender demands Arsene Wenger makes ‘different’ January signing
Matt Upson wants Arsene Wenger to add some defenders with physical presence to his Arsenal squad in Janaury
Matt Upson has urged Arsene Wenger to add more steel to his Arsenal side in the January transfer window.
The Gunners finished 2017 with a disappointing 1-1 draw with West Brom at The Hawthorns on New Year’s Eve.
Arsenal are outside the top four places ahead of their home clash against defending champions Chelsea at The Emirates on Wednesday.
While Liverpool FC have attracted for their poor defensive record this term, Arsenal have conceded more goals in the Premier League.
The north London outfit have struggled with injuries to Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny.
Former Arsenal defender Upson believes Wenger needs to sign a player with more physical presence.
“Arsenal are so heavily weighted in those lovely technical players, for me, a little bit more physical presence and steel in front of the back four or in midfield could add something a little bit different to the team,” Upson told Sky Sports.
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League spot for the first time.
The Gunners won the FA Cup for the third time in four seasons following a 2-1 win over Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
